CitySnake
The brackish Brisbane River
snakes through the suburbs,
carrying deep in its gurgling belly
echoes of ancient language shouted bank to bank,
settlers' sweat-stained tools,
long-drowned bones of upstream beasts,
secrets written on sodden paper,
old blue bottles, handmade bricks,
and, lurking among these
fragments of former lives,
the bold and hungry Bull shark.
